DPT Experience Design

Experience Design can be seen as a holistic approach of planning and designing tourism products, services and events with the focus on the quality of culturally relevant customer experiences which create emotional responses and leave a lasting impression and satisfaction for the user.

Your tourism studies are divided as follows:

    Basic Studies 35 ECTS

    Professional Studies 120 ECTS

    Free-Choice Electives 10 ECTS

    Practical Training 30 ECTS

    Bachelor’s Thesis 15 ECTS

In our programme you will learn how to do business in the tourism and hospitality industry. During the first study year the main focus is on multicultural issues and basic skills of tourism-related subjects. Also languages have an important role. Finnish students study Swedish and some other foreign language whereas our foreign students focus on learning the basics of Finnish. Basics of business studies are also covered during the first year.

In the second year we emphasise northern issues in your studies unless you take your study exchange period outside Finland. Management skills, marketing and sales, finance and more advanced tourism studies take place in the spring semester.

The third year is mainly dedicated to studies in Experience Design. You will also start your own applied research in form of your thesis. The thesis is finished during your fourth year at the same time with your destination development studies.

During the whole study time you will be working closely together with the local tourism companies through e.g. various projects with them.

Our Degree Programme in Tourism aims at giving such skills and competences the tourism and hospitality field requires. Tourism Management and Experience Design can be described as the actual specialisation area of the programme. Experience Design is seen as a holistic approach of planning and designing tourism products, services and events with the focus on such customer experiences which create emotional responses and leave a lasting impression and satisfaction for the user. In the programme-specific competences we emphasise field related skills of responsible tourism business, management and supervision as well as cultural and communication skills. According to the strategy of the Multidimensional Tourism Institute, also hospitality, foresight and safety issues are found important. Due to the specialisation area and one of the core competences in this degree programme, special attention is naturally paid to Service and Experience Design the elements of which can be noticed throughout the whole curriculum.

Entrepreneurship and business skills are included in our studies. Internationalisation and multicultural issues have naturally a central position as well, mostly due to the fact that the programme itself is international and its students come from various cultural backgrounds. Sustainable development and responsibility are the core elements which are taken into close consideration throughout the contents of the studies
